Parts of St Mary's C.E. (A) Primary School, Colton date from 1862. You can see the old Bell Tower in this photograph. There was a separate area for Boys and for Girls and even separate playgrounds. Long before 1862 there was a school in the village in the buildings next to the War Memorial -- what is now School House and School Cottage -- and at one time the Head Master had to live in Elm Cottage as one of the conditions of being appointed. |
When children stayed at Colton School until they were 14 the older girls had to walk to Colwich -- nearly three miles away -- for their Domestic Science (Cookery) Lessons.
|
The latest building alteration to the school took place in 2000 when part of the school hall was altered into a resource area for groups and computers. The remaining part of the hall was extended and fitted with new PE equipment. You can see the new roof over this part and also over the classroom nearest the playground which was built in 1965. We have a large playing field and also a Conservation area. Soon we hope to have a area developed with outdoor 'adventure' play equipment. |

After the extension to the Hall was finished in September 2000 all the children worked on a design for a Cross to be hung on the inside end wall. Six selected designs were then amalgamated and the whole project was completed when a Parent, Mr. David Simcock, carved the pictures into 3 dimensional wooden figures. If ever you are in school please look at this marvellous piece of work. |
There are 63 children in the school now, aged from 4
years to 11.
Many children live in the village and walk to school
but a lot also travel by car from other places such as
Hixon, Colwich, Hill Ridware and Rugeley.
