There are three areas connected with St. Mary's Church, Colton where burials have taken place. Originally the area around the church The CHURCHYARD was used. This area was in use from the 1770's until the 1890's. In the middle of the 1960's the churchyard was re-ordered. Mounds were flattened so that the whole area could be more easily maintained and headstones removed. Many of these were laid flat externally alongside the church walls and others, together with some memorials, were-sited to the West of the West tower. More recently, members of the Women's Institute surveyed and recorded as many of the inscriptions as they could and these details are listed alphabetically if you follow the Churchyard link at the top of this page. After interments ceased in the Churchyard a 'New Burial Ground' came into use across the road from the church, to the left of the school. This too became full in the late 1970's and is now known as the Old (or closed) Burial Ground. In due course all of these grave inscriptions will also be available on this site. The New Burial Ground has been in use since 1979 and recorded names will also be made available on this site in due course. The names have been transcribed from a copy which was made of the original survey so some transcription errors may have occurred.
Maintenance and upkeep of both the Closed Burial Ground and the New Burial Ground are the responsibility of Colton Parish Council (who own this community web-site) and their grateful thanks to past and present members of Colton W I, who have made available these names and details, is sincerely acknowledged.
